Chapter fourteen

The air in Bear Haven had taken on a new weight. What was once a peaceful and charming town, full of friendly faces and daily routines, now felt tense, as though the entire town was holding its collective breath. The magic that protected the town—the barrier that had been a constant, unseen force—was weakening, and everyone was beginning to feel it.

Logan Wilder stood on the edge of the town square, watching the people of Bear Haven move about their day. There was something different in their movements. The usual easygoing rhythm of life here had shifted. Conversations were quieter, glances more cautious, and even the children, usually full of energy and laughter, seemed hesitant as they played. Logan could sense their unease, the growing fear that no one wanted to voice.

Strange occurrences had begun to happen in Bear Haven. Lights flickered unpredictably at night, as though the power grid itself was uncertain. Odd sounds echoed through the woods that surrounded the town, carrying on the wind—a deep, unsettling hum that no one could explain. And the animals, those who lived close to the forest, had become more skittish. Deer darted into town in broad daylight, their usual instincts seemingly gone, and even the birds no longer sang with their usual fervor.

Logan’s protectors—Marcus, Caleb, and Wyatt—had been working tirelessly to strengthen the barrier, but it was like trying to mend a cracked dam with tape. The dark energy Malcolm had brought with him was growing, seeping into the town's very soul, and Logan could feel the pressure mounting.

His hands curled into fists in his jacket pockets as he scanned the square, his mind whirling with the decision he had been dreading for weeks: whether to tell Harper the truth about Bear Haven. She had a right to know, especially now, with Malcolm looming closer every day, but Logan had kept her in the dark, trying to protect her from the danger that was threatening them all.

But with the barrier weakening, how much longer could he keep it from her?

Logan was torn from his thoughts when Harper appeared from the corner of the general store. Her presence was a soothing balm to the chaos inside him. There she was, smiling softly as she crossed the street, her auburn hair catching the soft afternoon sunlight. Harper was everything that felt right in his life—a calming presence that had slipped in so effortlessly, and yet, everything he hadn’t told her threatened to tear them apart.

"Hey, you," she called out, her voice warm, her lips curving into that smile that made something inside him soften. “You’ve been avoiding me.”

Logan’s heart clenched at her words, a mix of guilt and longing swirling inside him. She wasn’t wrong. Since their emotional night at her cabin, Logan had been pulling away. He told himself it was to protect her, but the truth was, he was terrified. He couldn’t bear the thought of putting her in harm’s way, especially not with Malcolm back, lurking in the shadows.

“I’ve just been busy,” Logan replied, his voice rougher than he intended.
